Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil that comes from the fruit of oil palm trees and is sometimes found in pet food.
The two types of oil that can be produced are crude palm oil, which comes from squeezing fruit and palm kernel oil which comes from crushing the stone in the middle of the fruit.
More and more consumers are becoming aware of deforestation of the rainforest in order to satisfy our satiable appetite for Palm Oil in edible human products and pet foods.
What is the problem with Palm oil?
This oil has been and continues to be a major driver of deforestation of some of the world’s forests. Destroying the habitats of endangered species such as Orangutans and Pygmy elephants.
Palm oil free pet food
As someone who tries not to buy products with Palm Oil in personally, I know how hard it can be. It was made slightly easier for human food products last year, when labelling was required to state “Palm” rather than simply vegetable oil. Unfortunately the same isn’t true for pet food (among many other household goods), therefore making sure you are buying a palm oil free pet food is quite difficult. The majority of pet lovers are concerned about the plight of other wildlife and don’t want their purchase to have a negative impact on other wildlife.
