I’ve recently been speaking to a customer responding to questions about about how they should weigh out their dog’s food and feeding portions.

Her dogs have previously had tummy issues with their food so we had a chat and i suggested one of our grain free recipes which has gone down a treat. So much so that i’m led to believe they want to eat more at meal times. It’s great feedback for us.

I think this depends on the dog and the situation. If a dog is used to having a full bowl, and no one competing for food he might leave it and eat casually a little bit at a time. The same dog, if he thinks other dogs might get his food may try to eat everything in sight, and also be defensive of his feed/bowl. On the other hand, some animals are very timid and/or careful and will not eat till they’re sure its safe to. These reactions can depend on the dogs history and experience as well as their personality. This may also change as a dog adjusts to a new home or pack. It will also chanage as a dog adjusts to a new person or “master”. This is important as dogs are no longer wolves. We’ve embarked on a co-evolutionary journey with them that is in constant flux. In this context a dog will always be looking to the people in their life for cues, and they’re very observant. It’s important to be mindful of what and how you’re teaching. Also, to be consistent and not appear to be contradictory. So it really will depend on the dog and the situation the two of you find yourselves in.
