Senior Dog Food to give your dog the best in their Golden Years

Time catches up with dogs like it does with us humans and like us they can’t eat and drink like they did as their nutritional needs are different. Finding the right food for your dog as they enter their golden years doesn’t need to be difficult. Paws Pet Food Senior Dog Food Range has a recipe which will meet the needs of your family pet.

Why do senior dogs need specific recipes?

There is no firm definition when you dog should be considered senior, like us age happens gradually and therefore can be difficult to spot. As a general rule those Giant Breed (like Great Danes) dogs tend to have a shorter life expectancy and average size animal and tend to be considered senior at around 5 or 6 years old. Smaller breed (like Beagles) tend to live a little longer and consider senior around 8 or 9 years.

The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and the Kennel Club both have some great advice about caring for your senior dog. They highlight signs of an aging include;

  • Vision problems,
  • Lumps and other skin issues,
  • Weight loss or gain,
  • Bad Breath, excessive drooling or other dental symptoms.

The RVC makes a clear difference between ‘senior dogs’ and ‘geriatric dogs’ which tend to be animals towards the end of their senior period. Geriatric dog tend to have more severe symptoms including;

  • Altered behaviour (they are acting differently to how they would normally),
  • Difficulties or changes in their normal sleep patterns,
  • Loss of muscle mass,
  • Increased urination of urinary incontinence,
  • Impaired mobility

There is one more… but I forget what it is… oh yeah…

  • Memory loss

How can we help?
