A responsible breeder should have given your advice about your puppy’s diet however if not the UK Kennel Club and the Royal Veterinary College both offer helpful easy to understand advice.

Charlotte and Jess who set up Paws Pet Food are both dog mums. Charlotte has a New Zealand Huntaway called ‘Missy’ and Jess has a Shepherd-Akita called ‘Sherlock’. Both have raised they dogs from puppies and through experience understand the additional needs which puppies have.

Here are some of our thoughts when considering the needs of our little furry loved ones.

Finding the right balance

There are literally hundreds of diets out there finding one for your puppy can be a bit of a mine field. The most suitable diet should be easily digested and allow your dog to produce a dark brown, firm and formed stool If your puppy has soft or light stools, lots of wind or diarrhoea for long periods then either the diet may not be suitable or your loved one may have a digestive problems but either way the best thing is to speak with your vet.

May people are currently raving about ‘Raw Diet,’ feeding for dog and cats. Although I see the theory behind the idea we believe, “Dogs can’t grow on meat alone.” They need an appropriate combination of protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and lots and lots more.

Reading food pet labels and knowing what to look for is a good start and here at Paws Pet Food we have built our knowledge from experience. Our Puppy Dog Food Range has been specially formulated to be nutritionally complete and balanced with the sole aim of giving your puppy everything it needs to grow strong and healthy.

The quality of ingredients is so important

The source of the ingredients you are feeding your dog during the months of puppyhood and the early years of adulthood. As such we try to use as much high-quality natural ingredients and often with no additives. Our manufacturing partners are registered with the Pet Food Manufacturers Association (PFMA) which governs over 90% of the pet food manufacturers and has strict codes of practice.

Protein

Protein is so very important to puppies just like it is to children. It is the building blocks for pretty much everything in the body.

Did you dogs can’t process carbohydrates as easily as they can proteins? Making protein incredibly important in your dog’s development.

The current minimum recommended level for puppies is about 22%. Here at Paws Pet Food each of our Puppy Dog Food Range products contains between 27% and 30% protein which has come from natural meat sources. Sometime more isn’t better and our manufacturing partners cook the meat slowly at around 90 degrees Celsius insuring that the protein is both easily intact and digestible, so your puppy gets the most out of what it is eating.

Our Fish Range of dog foods are high in Omega 3 and Omega 6 which is an excellent source of which supports the cognitive and visual development whilst supporting the development of joints and mobility.

Calories

Puppies are fun, active and incredibly energetic. Often their activity needs a greater daily intake of calories then older less active dogs and the occasional (or more than occasional) nap. It makes sense all of that growing and exploring that puppies are doing they need that extra boost. This is sound advice until your puppy reaches approximately 80% of its full size. Don’t worry this is something which your vet can help with and like children regular check ups in their early life can help prevent developmental problems with bones or joints later in life.

We identify clearly on all of our products the level of Metabolisable Energy it contains to empower you to make the right choice for your loved one.

Other ingredients

Another good source of energy, vitamins and minerals which can give your that helping hand can come from vegetables such as Sweet Potato which is an excellent alternative to rice and not only contains complex carbohydrates but is also high in Vitamin B.

Brown rice can be a great source of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins however some individual animals may have intolerances or allergies to them. Our range of Hypoallergenic Range can help with those loved ones who need that little additional help in those early years.
