The global pet food market grew by 8% in 2018, its strongest performance in a decade. It continues to stand out for its strong consistent growth amongst consumer packaged goods. Since 2005, the global industry has grown 92% and has not seen growth of less than 4% in any year.
Pet Humanisation trends drive growth
As owners increasingly view their pets as a family member, they are willing to spend more on premium & high quality products. Despite there being a rise in average prices in 2018, premium dog and cat food saw a 7% growth in price.
Focus on meat
In 2018, pet food innovation was centered around meat. There was a focus on locally-sourced products, with consumers tending to trust locally-sourced products and are willing to pay more money for them. A second focus was the claims on products with a meat first claim said to be less important as listing meat content as a percentage of total ingredients as a key selling point.
The future
The outlook of the industry remains bright with consumers continuing to spend on their pets and innovation remains strong on many fronts. It is projected by Euromonitor that the global pet food market will see an annual growth rate of nearly 5% between 2018 and 2024.
