The popularity of small breed dogs is on the increase in the UK. Many people are beginning to purchase these types of dogs for a number of reasons such as they don’t need a large home, and tend to be more ‘economical’ in terms of food and accessories. The French Bulldog has recently overtaken the Labrador as the UK’s most popular breed of dog.
Why are small breed dogs becoming increasingly popular?
Small breed dogs are often easier to fit into modern lifestyles than larger dogs, whilst also thriving in urban environments. This is due to people living in smaller rented properties and a desire for greater mobility .
As the UK dog population consists mainly of smaller dogs, volumes sales of dog food are declining as these pets tend to eat less. However, pet owners are willing to pay more per kilogram for their pets food and therefore premium dog food sales continue to rise.
According to Euromonitor, in 2012 small dogs accounted for a 48% share of total dogs in the UK and reached a share of 55% in 2017. Small breed dogs ownership is set to continue to increase over the next few years and projected to be 59% of the total dog population in 2022.
